From the 21 August to 13 September 2020 Ascoli Piceno hosts the third edition of Ritratti d’Artista dance festival, created by Being in Motion and Studio Aira with the support of the Comune of Ascoli Piceno, Regione Marche, in collaboration with AMAT and the support of Hammer ADV. The artistic directors are Maria Rita Salvi and Maria Angela Pespani with the support of Paola Petrucci, Luana Milani and Cecilia Ventriglia.
The project aims to create a sinergy between contemporary artists in the south of Le Marche/Italy. INHABIT THE SPACE – Space is not only physical but also vision and emotion. The performance space offers the magical encounter between the imagination of the artist and of the audience.
This year the festival is hosting three artists from Le Marche, Italy central region (DAVIDE CALVARESI, SIMONA LISI and FRANCESCO MARILUNGO) and the first foreign artist from London (MARGARITA ZAFRILLA OLAYO).
The program includes 3 residential workshops for dancers and performers, but also for those interested in movement exploration. The choreographers leading the workshops will show the public the result of their creative research with the group and shape their portrait by deepening the understanding of their process in a conversation with the audience. New to this edition is the Screen Dance which is part of the program in collaboration with CINEMATICA Festival.
The photgrapher MARCO BIANCUCCI – F for Fake Comunicazione Visiva, will develop a portrait project following the guest artists.

The focus of this three day workshop is on developing choreography for the camera and the possibility of telling a story through images. Together with the participants, an itinerary will be developed around Ascoli Piceno city center, where the squares, monuments and building’s facades will become the background of a video-choreography.
This workshop is open to artists from a variety of backgrounds and interests.
The final result is the creation of PIANO SEQUENZA a video project that will be presented Saturday 12 September at Chiostro di S.Agostino.
Davide Calvaresi – artist and choreographer (Offida – AP). In 2019 with Olmo he won the Golden Globe for best short film. He has been leading the company 7-8 chili since 2005 receiving support from AMAT. Davide creates visual devices that cross different disciplines from video art to digital choreography.
This intensive week workshop offers the opportunity to enter the creative and devising process of the choreographer coming to Ascoli Piceno with two of his dancers. Party Girl Extended comes from the need to extend to more bodies the practice developed in his latest project “Party Girl”. Scores and composition tools will be shared in order to create certain qualities that metaphorically translate the process of “objectification” that a body undergoes when it prostitutes itself.
The workshop is open to professional dancers and is leading to a final performance/sharing open to the public on Saturday 5 September at Chiostro S.Agostino.
Francesco Marilungo – dancer and choreographer (Montegranaro – FM). After studying thermo-mechanical engineering, he starts training in dance-theatre at the Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi in Milan. Since 2010 he has been collaborating with international artists and since 2012 he has been dancing for Enzo Cosimi Dance Company. He has embarked a journey of research between performance art and contemporary dance, developing his own work.
This three day workshop with Spanish choreographer and dancer Margarita Zafrilla Olayo will be led in English and Italian. It invite us to play between dance meditation and movement conversation, revisiting notions of equilibrium, trust and support. Moving inside and outside an object material, suspended between more than one, communicating through our vertical stands, balancing with different structural tensions, inclinations and impressions.
The workshop is open to dancers and performers, leading to a final performance/sharing Sunday 13 September at Chiostro S.Agostino.
Margarita Zafrilla Olayo – dancer and choreographer (b.Madrid). She is an artist living and working in London with dance and performance, video and installation, grounding herself on questions on how our bodies are transformed by movement. Her work has been presented at MACRO ASILO-Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Roma, the Venice Biennale 2019-GAD, Open-Choreography Siobhan Davies Dance Studios and in many Uk and European dance festivals. www.margaritazafrilla.com
Presentation of the performance as the final result of the choreographic workshop led by Francesco Marilungo and conversation with the artist. Party Girl Extended is part of the choreographer’s investigation of the concept of the female body as an object of desire. Starting from postures and movements capable of triggering desire in the collective imagination, the dancers will construct a minimal dance consisting of a stylized and suspended alphabet. An off-stage voice will model the structure of the performance in real time.
Opening with Prelude: two artists come together under the same frame of vision, unified by the new choreographies, encounters, interplays of Margarita Zafrilla Olayo’s movement and ink and wine processes in Pato Bosich’s drawing. This coversation between dance and drawing takes palce in video by allowing each other’s qualities to coexist.
DAL CORPO ALLO SCHERMO
A conversation with Simona Lisi, dancer, actress, choreographer and artistic director of CINEMATICA Festival to open a glimpse of history of screendance and the relationship between body and screen. We will be viewing some of the artist’s video work and images.
Piano Sequenza is the video rendering of the workshop held by Davide Calvaresi dedicated to build a story through images. In the creation process, shared with the participant, the importance of the gesture in relation to the urban space is central. Squares and monuments of the city of Ascoli Piceno will be the backdrop to the video. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artist.
A dancing sculpture performing a movement conversation and dance meditation that needs more than one of us to exist, presented as the final exploration of the three day workshop lab. Making passages where the reorientation of our own vertical lives can actually happen, balancing and rebalancing tension through the feeling of movement in relation to each other, liberating a prelinguistic form of knowledge and revisiting notions of trust.
